Caring for Children Exposed to Trauma: An Introduction to Trauma-informed Care

Twenty-six percent of children in America will have experienced or been exposed to a traumatic event by age four.  Children often express their distress through behavior that is confusing to those that care for them.  Experts agree that caregivers and teachers are a critical part of the treatment team and are key to helping children heal.  This webinar will cover the difference between acute and complex trauma, characteristics of children who have been exposed to trauma, the elements of a trauma informed environment, and policies and procedures that are beneficial to children with a trauma history.

Presenter:

Dr. Barbara Sorrels has been in the field of early childhood education for 40 years serving as a childcare provider, childcare owner and director, classroom teacher and university professor. She is currently the executive director of The Institute for Childhood Education, a professional development and consulting company for early childhood professionals. In recent years Dr. Sorrels has worked extensively with agencies and parents serving children who have experienced trauma. Her passion is helping children from hard places find hope and healing. She holds a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from the University of Maryland, a masters in Christian education from Southwestern Seminary and a doctorate in early childhood education from Oklahoma State University.
