About Sonya Stevens

What’s your role at NARA and what do you find most rewarding about it?
I am the NARA project manager. This means that when we provide consulting services, I ensure deliverables meet the client’s needs, are high quality, and meet timelines. I am an innovator and researcher at heart, so what I find most rewarding is assisting program improvements advancing the regulatory field through valid and reliable methods of regulatory oversight that bolster the mission of protection through prevention.

In one sentence, explain NARA’s mission to someone outside the industry?
Providing community and services to regulatory professionals in the human care industries.

How long have you been with NARA?
I started in this role with NARA in August of 2024. Prior to that, I was a NARA independent consultant beginning early 2022.

What’s your favorite part of your job?
So far, getting to know new people and learning from their experiences.

If you could trade jobs with anyone at NARA for a day, whose role would you want to try and why?
I can't say I would trade with anyone at this point... Projects are my jam! Besides, we are all uniquely skilled and perfect for each role - This really is a great team and we help each other, so I already feel like we do it all!

What’s the most common misconception people have about the regulatory world?
That regulators really are "out to get them". The truth is they care deeply about human care and doing their part to keep vulnerable individuals safe, healthy and thriving.

When you’re not keeping things compliant, what’s your favorite way to unwind or recharge?
When I can, I love gardening, reading and traveling.

What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had working at NARA so far?
Working with the other staff at Seminar setting up - it was hard work but filled with tons of laughing.

What’s a “fun fact” about you that no one would guess just by looking at your regulatory resume?

In preschool, my best “subject” was sorting and classification - I definitely earned an A+! Maybe that is why I love analytics so much.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
In the immortal words of Dori - "keep on swimming". Hard things are best accomplished one step at a time.
