Committee FAQs

Who can join a committee?

Committee membership is open to both NARA members and non-members. Individuals committed to contributing to NARA’s mission and supporting the regulatory community are encouraged to apply during our annual Committee Interest Period in November.

How much time does it take to serve on a committee?

Time commitments vary by committee, but most meet once a month for about an hour, with occasional additional work between meetings depending on projects and deadlines. Members are expected to be active participants throughout the year.

How do I join a committee?

Each November, NARA opens the Committee Interest Survey where you can select up to two committees you’d like to serve on. After reviewing all responses, we assign members based on interest, skills, and NARA’s needs. New committee terms begin in January.

Can I serve on more than one committee?

Yes. You may express interest in up to two committees on the Committee Interest Survey. While we try to match members with their preferences, assignments depend on availability and organizational needs.

I’m new to NARA. Will I be expected to lead projects or know everything?

Not at all. Committees are collaborative spaces where members contribute based on their skills, experiences, and interests. New members are encouraged to participate, learn, and gradually take on more responsibility if they wish.

How long is a typical committee term?

Committee terms typically last one calendar year, beginning in January and ending in December.

Will committee work help with my professional development?

Yes. Serving on a committee provides valuable networking opportunities, strengthens leadership and collaboration skills, and offers experience in strategic planning and problem-solving—all of which support professional growth.

Are committee meetings recorded or available if I can’t attend live?

Committee meetings are not recorded. However, NARA uses AI tools to assist with note-taking, and meeting minutes are shared with members and posted to the relevant committee’s webpage.

Can I leave a committee if it’s not a good fit?

Yes. If you find a committee isn’t the right match, notify the committee chair or NARA staff. We may recommend an alternative committee where your skills and interests are a better fit.
